Formosan Subterranean Termite-resistant wood
to aid builders and homeowners
Island Cypress LLC released today the results of its 20-month research cooperation with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in New Orleans. The news release paralleled the release by the Southern Regional Research Center of their research into 30 types of commercial lumber that attract or repel the Formosan Subterranean Termite.
Island Cypress LLC has worked with the USDA to supply yellow cedar from Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada for the testing. The area is the original source of the high-quality cypress. The company brought the wood to the USDA's attention based upon its experience in the use of the wood in Asia and Japan. There the yellow cedar is specified for uses where there is a need for "high decay inhibition and high termite-proof performance."
The testing determined that eight species of wood were less likely to lure the insects into homes. In fact, these eight actually killed the termite colonies during the (replicated) three-month forced-feeding trials.
Even if the termites try to eat the yellow cedar, it is toxic to them.
The yellow cedar is the only species amongst the eight that has strength and cost characteristics that are suitable for house repair and construction. It is also suitable for use in outdoor decks, fences and furniture. Yellow cedar has machining properties that make it suitable for sash, door, and millwork applications. It was praised in recent product testing by custom door maker Lafayette Woodworking. Louisiana residents will recognize the distinctive cypress aroma and its similarity in appearance to its traditional bald cypress, widely used in New Orleans and the French Quarter in the past.
Island Cypress is establishing a supply of this natural, resistant lumber into Louisiana through lumberyards supplied by Ransone Wholesale Lumber and through Riverside Lumber, both of New Orleans.
